Body as Matter, Energy Field, and Consciousness

It is common—especially in Western medical science—to view our body as matter, as a mass of flesh and blood. Admittedly, an extremely intricate and cleverly constructed mass that reveals fewer secrets as medical science advances. Bodily functioning is explained in terms of DNA, thus reducing the living body to a collection of chemical processes.

In this view, our consciousness is nothing more than a series of highly ingenious brain constructs. Going one step further is to see our body as a fully interconnected electromagnetic energy field. This is a vision found in ancient Chinese medicine, for example. Progressive neuroscientists also confirm that meridians can be found in the body’s connective tissue, also called fascia. Everything is connected to everything else in an incredibly fascinating and intelligent way, functioning as a whole.

An even broader vision is to see the body as consciousness, as light, as love. Every cell, every organ, every bone, every muscle in our body is permeated with consciousness, with light, with love. Permeated with infinite intelligence. New Age nonsense? Delusions of a mentally ill person? The talk of someone under the influence of drugs? No, this understanding can be found in all ancient spiritual and earthly teachings. Last week, I experienced it firsthand during the “Arun Conscious Touch” Masterclass at the Rebalancing School. This is a form of loving and conscious touch developed by one of the founders of the Rebalancing School named Anubuddha.

One of the insights during the training was that when you touch the body with consciousness and love, the body feels seen. The body relaxes at a deep level—fascia relaxes, among other things—and remembers the natural blueprint of how it should function. It recovers and heals. The person who touches is not the healer in this process. There is no doctor and patient. No therapist and client. No knower and ignorant. No helper and helpless. Instead, there is an encounter with a fellow human being, like you and me. Nor is there a treatment or session. Rather, the encounter is more like a meditation in which wordless consciousness and love recognize each other. Nothing is done and nothing changes. Conscious presence and awake, loving hands make the body feel recognized and remember its true nature of consciousness and love. In a simple and straightforward way.
